Regina Housing Highlights - April 7, 2024
Affordable, charming, walkable houses in Canada for sale under $250,000
Yes, that’s right — we’re back again with more Regina “Housing Highlights”, a brief look at some of the local housing units for sale in Regina (and maybe eventually other cities too) for less than $250,000.
Here’s the catch — the housing we’ll be highlighting will consist entirely of places with great Walk Scores, Bike Scores, or Transit Scores (and ideally all three) from the eponymous WalkScore.com. They will also look nice, interesting, unusual or wacky in some way or have some other vague, subjective potential.
All the usual disclaimers apply — and we should point out that nobody here at Prairie Townscapes is making any commissions or receiving any incentives for doing this. All images are from Realtor.ca and the listings are linked below.
2055 St John St., Regina, SK
$249,900. 1617 sq ft
4 bedroom, 2 bathroom
Neighbourhood (according to Realtor.ca): Heritage
Walk Score: 88 Very Walkable
Transit Score: 54 Good Transit
Bike Score: 50 Bikeable
You read Anne of Green Gables. Now it’s your chance to be You of Wild Gables — that is some wild gable end on this vintage house in the Heritage neighbourhood. Modern shower, rumpus room upstairs and a finely-appointed kitchen. Get a glimpse of town and Regina’s blue sky right from your new bedroom. With the city’s recent legalization of backyard suites, there is an opportunity here for a revenue unit on top of a detached garage — with no demo required! Make new housing while making bank. Check out the listing here.
2149 Princess Street, Regina, SK
$249,900. 711 sq ft
2 bedroom, 2 bathroom
Neighbourhood (according to Realtor.ca): Cathedral
Walk Score: 76 Very Walkable
Transit Score: 46 Some Transit
Bike Score: 82 Very Bikeable
These solid, decent Cathedral houses are apparently getting scarce in this relatively affordable range. You are probably not legally required to maintain the brightly-painted images of celestial bodies and sea creatures, nor the neon green paint on the walls. Think of them as inspiration for the creative, dynamic life you imagine yourself leading in your new home, as well as a poignant elegy for the foregone possibilities of subculture more generally. Once Regina implements its Transit Master Plan, the transit score here should improve considerably, should a lower-carbon lifestyle be your cup of (herbal) tea. Check out the listing here.
1578 Retallack Street, Regina, SK
$184,500. 1092 sq ft
4 bedroom, 3 bathroom
Neighbourhood (according to Realtor.ca): North Central
Walk Score: 87 Very walkable
Transit Score: 54 Good transit
Bike Score: 69 Bikeable
Do you have wistful memories of old football games? This finely renovated unit in North Central, across from the former Taylor Field — and the future Taylor Field Neighbourhood — could be your brand new abode. I would invest in a solid fence, now allowed to be up to 7 feet tall, thanks to improved city by-laws. Like the previous house, opportunity for a laneway suite and detached garage. Personally i’d block off that atrocious curb cut on the side yard. Check out the listing here.
