Regina Housing Highlights - Sept 28, 2023
Even more affordable, charming, walkable houses in Canada for sale under $250,000
We’re back with more Regina “Housing Highlights.”
You’ve probably been reading a lot in the news lately about Canada’s housing crisis. We thought we would offer a modest antidote to all the unrelenting gloom. So we’re going to take a brief look at some of the local housing units for sale in Regina — and who knows, maybe eventually other cities too — for less than $250,000.
Here’s the catch — the housing we’ll be highlighting will consist entirely of places with great Walk Scores, Bike Scores, or Transit Scores (and ideally all three) from the eponymous WalkScore.com. They will also look nice, interesting, unusual or wacky in some way or have some other vague, subjective potential.
All the usual disclaimers apply — and we should point out that nobody here at Prairie Townscapes is making any commission or receiving any incentives for doing this. All images are from Realtor.ca and the listings are linked below.

This week’s theme seems to be “places with potential” — homes where a lot of elbow grease and some basic carpentry skills might take you to another world. And when I look at this house, the phrase “addition by subtraction” comes to mind. With a refresh of some of the textures and surfaces, and perhaps changing out the white lattice, this could be an enjoyable spot to call your own. The backyard patio area seems to get a lot of use entertaining. Doesn’t it just make you want to invite your friends over for a late night backyard beer? Pre-war “grand rooms” await your indoor pursuits as well. Drawing inspiration from the kitchen, tin ceilings could be fun. The house is right near the park, and a short walk, bus or bike ride from downtown. Check out the listing here.
1556 Retallack Street, Regina, SK
$156,400. 92.5 m2
3 bedroom, 2 bathroom
Neighbourhood (according to Realtor.ca): North Central
Walk Score: 87 Very Walkable
Transit Score: 54 Good Transit
Bike Score: 69 Bikeable
Do you remember what I was saying about houses with vague potential? If you are a fan of mid-century modern, you could play up this formstone cladding to your heart’s content. This is another one of Regina’s neighbourhoods where you could save big on driving costs, while living in a classic, pre-war, tree-lined grid street. The interior could be updated the way you like it, and I feel like landscaping in the back would bring you some big benefits. If you are a fan of CFL, you’re only a brisk walk away from Mosaic stadium. If you’re not, you could walk the opposite direction instead and head to Bushwakker, some of the breweries or even go downtown. Check out the listing here.
2263 Osler Street, Regina, SK
$179,900. 195 m2
5 bedroom, 3 bathroom
Neighbourhood (according to Realtor.ca): Heritage
Walk Score: 75 Very Walkable
Transit Score: 53 Good Transit
Bike Score: 68 Bikeable
Charm, charm, charm — if you can keep it. Big “Character house” vibes, and you’ll find yourself on a lovely, tree-lined street. Honestly, I’ve always thought that these are some of the most charming streets in Regina, and they need more people who value that sort of thing. You’ll have to put in a lot of work to end up with the dazzling interior of your dreams, but well worth it, once you do. If you are a fan of health, check out the nearby hospital and various medical offices, or go on a breezy stroll downtown. There’s also one of Regina’s hippest breweries and sometimes even a restaurant nearby. Check out the listing here.
